Today, the vast world of online shopping is readily available at our fingertips. We can shop for and purchase a new candle or kitchen appliance in a matter of minutes and have it delivered on the doorstep in just a couple days’ time – sometimes even the same day! However, with that much buying power comes great responsibility.
The things we purchase influence what gets created down the line which is why it is so important to make informed choices. It is not always possible to buy sustainably, but it is possible to be informed and make as many sustainable choices as your budget and the supply chain will allow. Whether you’re buying a new sweater or a new couch, it is important to consider how these products are made. At Masai Copenhagen, we put intention into every step of our process because we are committed to creating a better future for us all.
Masai Is Building a Better Future With Canopy
At Masai, we know we play a part in the global effort to preserve our planet for future generations. We are continuously taking steps towards better practices to reduce our footprint. That is why we are proud to say that Masai is a Canopy partner. If you are not familiar, Canopy is an environmental organization with the mission to protect the world’s forests, species, climate, and Indigenous communities’ rights.
In our collections, we have more than 60% wood-based fibers, and as such, we are committed to protecting the world’s forests and ensuring responsible wood-fiber sourcing. Our goal is to use these valuable resources responsibly, to ensure they are around for many generations to come. Our partnership has helped us transform our supply chain. We never use ancient or endangered forests in our production of cellulosic fiber materials. Furthermore, by partnering with canopy, we are committed to influencing our supply chains in order to protect the world’s remaining ancient and endangered forests and habitats.
Advocating for Sustainable Forestry With the FSC®
In 2019, Masai became a member of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). We are honored to be the first Danish fashion brand to ever gain FSC certification. Not only are our paper goods (packaging and shipping materials) FSC certified, but now our wood-based fabrics are too! To receive FSC® certification a company’s lumber and wood supplier must not fell more trees than what can be replenished. Essentially, our goal is to give more than we take. This is what sustainability means to us.
In addition to practicing sustainable lumber harvesting, the FSC also ensures protection of all flora and fauna in FSC® forests as well as upholding fair wages and safe working environments for workers in forestry. Through our partnership with the FSC®, we are focused on improving our materials, supply chains, and production plans for a better future. The future of forests is in our hands, and we take that responsibility very seriously.
Our Timeless Clothes Are Made to Last
The first step in creating a sustainable brand is making products that can last a lifetime. Fast fashion may be affordable, but in the long run, when you factor in needing to frequently replace clothes that are not made well, cheaper garments harm not only the environment, but also your budget, too! That’s why we make clothes that are designed to be well loved. Our garments are intended to be loved for a lifetime, and possibly even passed down to the next generation.
We also take care to design garments that are according to timeless, classic fashion principles, not trends. This is so that each of our pieces can be worn season after season, becoming beloved closet staples. Instead of needing to completely overhaul your wardrobe each season, our goal is for you to be able to slowly build the wardrobe of your dreams by adding to your core pieces each season. Plus, with the help of our care guide, you’ll learn how to properly care for your items, ensuring they last longer. This is all for the end goal of empowering you to make more sustainable choices as you find joy in each item for seasons to come.
Love, Wear, Repeat: Our Recycling Program
While we make our clothes to last, we know that it is not always feasible to hold onto a garment forever. Personal styles change and bodies grow. This means that sometimes you need to say goodbye to some articles of clothing. However, simply throwing away clothes is extremely harmful to the environment. Many clothes contain microplastics that can end up in our waterways, and thus our food and other animals. These plastics can even leach harmful chemicals.
We are passionate about considering a garment’s entire lifecycle and this includes proper disposal. To solve this issue, we make it easy for you to recycle your Masai garments after you are done loving them. To take advantage of our return program, simply visit one of our stores when you are ready to return your pre-loved Masai garment. From there, we will pass the garment along to the Red Cross to resell in one of their shops. The clothing donations are accompanied by annual donations from Masai to support Red Cross humanitarian initiatives globally.
Committed to Thoughtfulness
At Masai, our goal is to exude thoughtfulness in everything we do. From our designs, to our manufacturing, even to how our garments arrive to you, we put intention in every step. We want to provide you with clothes that you feel good about buying, not just clothes that look and feel good. We know that life is better when you stop to smell the roses, so we want to know: How do you incorporate thoughtfulness into your life? What intention do you weave into your daily life? Join the conversation on social media, we can’t wait to hear from you! If you have any feedback or questions about our products or our brand, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here for you!
